Winter Lighting Challenge 2013-2014, Shutter Drag

Andrea Crawleys Lemonade Stand rPhew, Week 17 of the Winter Lighting Challenge, hosted by Carrie Swails (owner of Photography Awesomesauce) is finally here!  Pictures are due by midnight tomorrow night….and we lose an hour tonight!  Some of you may know the things my family has been enduring so far this year and it is beginning to wear on me, I was almost ready to not do this weeks challenge.  Simply, I’m drained and just wanted to go to bed.  But then, I’d be letting so many people down who have helped me make it this far.  And my husband and I have invested in our business in ways we would not have had it not been to meet the requirements of the challenge.  I couldn’t give up just because I was tired.  Besides, this happens to be a pretty fun technique that is super easy to apply.  Easy as it is to DO it’s a little tricky to master to stunning effect.

Now, since I didn’t get out to take this picture sooner, I didn’t get to practice the technique so much as I would have liked.  I’d wanted to head down town where there would be lots of traffic lights, vehicle lights, sign lights, etc.  But with my husband out of town, incapable of watching out for my well being as I got the shot, and it being Saturday night in a college town I thought it’d be a safer idea to stay home and play with left over Christmas lights instead.  Here is what I got:

I applied an antique look and vignette to the image

Before I took these images of my daughter, I showed her how I planned to get the picture I wanted and snapped an image of my computer screen; we both thought it was pretty cool and one of my favorites:

My husband did come home overnight to help with an event shoot we had at our church and I did employ this method while we were there.  I don’t think it qualifies for this challenge, though, because flash was not used to take it.  Amazingly, there was plenty of light at the venue!  This was an event hosted by our church to thank those who have volunteered over the last year.  They titled it, “At the Hop” and naturally decorated with a ’50’s theme.  During this shot, everyone was practicing one of the hot swing dances of the day:

The antique look seemed to make sense here, too.
