Winter Lighting Challenge 2013-2014, Bokeh Shapes

Andrea Crawleys Lemonade Stand rThis week has been the toughest week of the challenge for me so far. Not because it was an especially hard challenge but because it has been an especially busy week! Thank God for an “easy” challenge this week. Usually I wait until late Thursday or Friday to take the pictures but knowing how busy I would be this past week (and this week, too) I took some fun photos on Tuesday night.  Sadly, I didn’t copy them to my husband’s computer before we started our road trip. In fact, I am writing this post while sitting at my father in law’s NC home as he and my husband discuss all things Duck Dynasty.  Later tonight I will transpose it from my Blackberry to my website. However, I am left still with the problem of no picture.

I was eager to take the original photos but sitting in our hotel room with my camera and the Christmas lights I felt so uninspired. So, I just started shooting.  Sometimes that’s what you need to do, just get started. The original images were just regular bokeh so when we stopped for gas and food on our way up and there was a craft store practically next door I ran in and got a hole punch, some black paper and tape. At the hotel I cut out a disk, punched a hole, and hung the lights. After a few uninteresting shots, I grabbed a gift bag.  Since it was on the same plane as the lights I had to take two photos. See, to create bokeh, your light source must be out of focus! That’s not something photographers usually aim for, but with this particular challenge it was essential. Then, I had to shoot the same scene but this time it need to be nice and sharp.

So, my challenge entry for this week is a composite image.  I really wish I’d not been so rushed and using my computer with all of MY settings rather than my husband’s computer. But I’m very grateful that it has been available to me so I can complete this weeks challenge. Without further adieu:

It’s really a lot of fun to do and really easy!  All you need to do is cover the lens of your camera so that NO LIGHT gets through. Punch/cut a hole of any shape in the paper cover for the lens. Make sure the light sources are out of focus before you snap your picture and Viola! you’ve got a picture of  Shaped Bokeh!!!!  Let me know how it works out for you.  ~Katie
