Winter Lighting Challenge 2013-2014, Diffusing Direct Flash

Andrea Crawleys Lemonade Stand rWe only have a few more weeks left in the Photography Awesomesauce Winter Photo Challenge!  I’m getting so excited.  Lots of changes are happening for Photography Awesomesauce right now and that has made finishing this challenge, well, challenging!  With all of the exciting upgrades Carrie Swails is getting done for her business I’m getting excited to make some changes of my own.  But I’ll get back to you about that later.

For this week, we were challenged to use a diffuser with our flash.  I am ashamed to admit that I don’t own a common plastic diffuser.  As long as I have owned my camera, it is one of the first things I should have purchased along the way!  I’ve always used other things, usually a tissue.  And that’s just what I did this time.

But I have spent more time editing the photos than I did taking the pictures.  Well, that’s not really all that uncommon.  But I started playing around in Photo Shop Elements creating a new background for the image.  For a first attempt it’s not too bad but overall I am not satisfied.  I hope you like it anyway.

This is another image I took. She’s ‘floating’ on a fabric cloud sat on top of a microwave. I have a third image with it edited out but it looked odd so I’m sharing this one instead. But I will admit to feeling proud of myself for editing out the refrigerator in the background!

The angel is one of my husband’s Mamaw’s dolls.  I took it into the kitchen and sat her down on top of the microwave on her cloud shaped pillow.  I opened the window behind the microwave for direct sunlight to pour in from the right.  Then I mounted my flash on a stand in front of and just to the left of the doll, tilted the head to a 45* angle and slipped a bit of tissue under the built-in diffuser.  I stood directly in front of the doll and the flash was between us and to my left a bit.
